Behind the Scenes at a Newborn Photoshoot

We met Amie, Mark and gorgeous 16-day-old Darcie when they came to the studio in response to a model call in October. Model calls are when we want to create some new marketing images, particularly if we have new props or backdrops or we want to try different colour combinations. We ask for a family to come and visit us and they receive a complimentary newborn photography experience. They can sit back and relax while we spoil them with endless supplies of tea, coffee, cold drinks and cookies and capture timeless images of their precious newborn in our home-from-home studio.

Booking a Newborn Photoshoot

We had a call from Amie who wanted to book the session with her daughter Darcie. At the time of booking, we like to talk to new mums about what they would like from the experience and the kinds of images they like. We talk about their favourite style of images, their favourite colours and what mum and dad should wear for their parent images. We also explain how the day will be structured and that everything is done at the baby’s speed to make sure they are safe and comfortable at all times. Amie was really excited to have the session booked in.

Is a Newborn Session Date Flexible?

Unfortunately, after the booking, Amie contacted us to say she had some health issues and wasn’t feeling well. She expected the session to be cancelled, but we reassured her that dates get moved all the time. We often work around babies arriving early or later than planned, as well as mums and babies that need to spend longer in hospital. So we rearranged the session to suit Amie, Darcie and dad Mark a few days later.

At the Newborn Photography Experience

We were delighted to meet the whole family on the day. We were able to pamper mum and dad, so they could sit and relax while we captured some timeless images of Darcie. They spent about three hours in the studio, giving us time to capture some wonderful images and wonderful colour combinations too. Darcie was an absolute angel and she slept peacefully through the whole session.

What Happens After the Newborn Photography Session?

After the experience, we take about a week to edit the images. Our style of editing includes very little correction and smoothing as we love to see baby looking as natural as possible. We choose the very best images from the session and edit those into a beautiful slideshow.

It was wonderful to see Amie, Mark and Darcie again, Darcie had changed so much even in the few days since her session. The viewing is a very relaxed event with the opportunity to choose from some different types of artwork parents want to purchase. We love to see mum and dads faces when they see the images for the first time and we always have tissues on hand for any tears of joy!

Darcie is ‘Highly Commended’

We are very proud of all our images and it is so special when new mums and dads watch their slideshow and we hear that they love their images as much as us. If new mums and dads are happy, we do sometimes enter them into awards and competitions. Not only do we love to share our work as we are very proud of it, but competitions can be a great source of feedback and a fantastic way of continually improving our skills.

Among the amazing images we captured with Darcie was this particular one, which was ‘Highly Commended’ in the monthly competition run by the Masters Photography Association. The judge described it as ‘a really gorgeous newborn image’.

Amie’s Experience of a Newborn Photoshoot

A few days after the viewing we received a lovely comment on Facebook from Amie. Amie says:

“A very special experience from start to finish. After stumbling across a Facebook post I am so glad that we pursued this further. Sarah is so lovely and made us feel so very welcome – right down to the welcome message on the chalkboard in the studio! The whole experience felt incredibly personal. Sarah invited us into her beautiful studio and as promised, we were able to sit back and relax with unlimited hot and cold drinks and delicious cookies. No corporate surroundings here but a warm, cosy and inviting set up – a real home from home. Although we weren’t quite sure how we would be able to “relax,” in reality, we were able to do just that. Sarah handled our 16-day-old incredibly professionally, always with care and sensitivity which really put us at ease.

Sarah is a professional through and through and her creative flair and attention to detail are unsurpassed. She has managed to create a perfect balance between a somewhat traditional approach to a family portrait with something of a unique twist and beautifully bespoke, “arty” newborn shots incorporating subtle props without being over the top.

The cinema-style viewing of the photographs a week later was a wonderful experience. There was never any rush and we were able to take our time to peruse the photographs whilst devouring more cookies! We were absolutely delighted with the images that Sarah had captured. There was no hard sales pitch or obligation to purchase but Sarah was able to explore a variety of options with us including mounted prints, canvases and digital images on a USB which is not something that all photographers offer.

We cannot wait to collect our prints and canvas in a few weeks’ time and look forward to returning for more professional photographs as our little one (as she is now!) matures into a little lady. We love Sarah’s work and cannot recommend her highly enough.”

Thank you so much, Amie, Mark and Darcie. It was a pleasure to welcome you to the studio and we can’t wait to show you your final artwork when it’s ready.
